Claire Garoutte’s photography has appeared in numerous anthologies including publications by Cassel Press and Midmarch Press and in magazines such as Art in America and Der Spegel. Her first book, Matter of Trust, was published in 1996 in Germany by Konkursbuck Verlag, and in 2007, Duke University Press published Crossing the Water: A Path to the Afro-Cuban Spirit World, coauthored with Anneke Wambaugh. She has exhibited internationally in the U.S, Europe and Cuba and has received awards from the Rose Water Network and Women in Photography. She began teaching photography in 1989 at the Photographic Center Northwest, in Seattle Washington, where she was also the Director of Education during the years 1998 to 2006. Today, Claire is an Assistant Professor at Seattle University.
