I began traveling to Cuba in 1994. Over the past thirteen years I have witnessed a country in economic and social transition, which is inevitably on the verge of tremendous change. My photographs provide an intimate view of life in Cuba during this time of anticipation, as the Cuban people patiently wait in a state of arrested animation. Covering a ten-year period, the images were shot in the streets of Havana and Santiago de Cuba, in homes of friends and family, and while traveling around the island.
My documentary photography about Afro-Cuban religious practices subtly and overtly influences this work. The relationships that I am fortunate to have in Cuba, and the casual, intimate and occasionally extraordinary moments shared with friends and family, are also reflected. I will continue to create images from behind the scenes, as Cuba’s historic saga evolves.
